CRIP 2-8-2 #2309 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific |
| Description: |
This USRA "Mikado light" 2-8-2 was built by Alco-Schenectady in October of 1918 originally as Texas & Pacific #550 (serial #59598). In 1919, the United States Railroad Administration re-allocated TP #550 and 9 other sister TP Mikados to the Rock Island who renumbered them #2309-2319. This was done to help with the Rock Island power shortage during WW I. The loco lasted until retirement in 1948 and eventually sold for scrap in December of 1948. Original specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine wt of 290,000 lb and tractive force of 54,500 lb. No date was given for this photo so an approximate one was used.This is an R. H. Carlson photo. |

Beautiful action shot of this Alco-Richmond 2-8-2 Mikado built in November of 1918 for the Chicago & North Western Rwy. A short note on back states "E.B. on Linn Co Rwy 10-15-43." Specs - serial #58393, class J, 62" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, engine weight of 304,500 lb, tractive effort of 59,167 lb. A stoker was applied in October 1940. The class remained in widespread service well into the 1950s. Unknown photographer. |

Data from "Baldwin 4-4-2 for the Idaho & Washington Northern" Railway and Locomotive Engineering, Vol 23, No 2 (February 1910), pp. 52-53. Baldwin Locomotive Works number was 33778 built in September 1909. When the Milwaukee took over the I&WN in 1916, they placed this locomotive in its own A-2/3s (Class A-4s/B-4s) class. In the 1930s, the 3135 was later considerably modified with a Schmidt superheater. At some point, the Milwaukee decided to remove the Baldwin smokebox superheater that had accompanied the locomotive when it was delivered to the Idaho & Washington Northern as number 31 in 1909. At the same time the shops mounted a new boiler, they also rolled in taller drivers. The result was a considerably heavier, but more powerful Atlantic that remained in service as a single-engine class until 1951. |

Baldwin built this 4-6-0 steam locomotive in October of 1901 originally as CM&StP Vauclain compound ten wheeler #399 (serial #19600, class B4). The loco was renumbered several times starting in March of 1907 to #1749 > in September of 1912 to #4349 > in July of 1916, the loco was simplified and renumbered #2899 > in November of 1920 to @2875 > and finally in July of 1038 to MILW #1058. After serving for 50 years, the loco was sent to the scrapper's torch in October of 1951. No exact day in 1947 was given so an approximate day was used. The photo was taken by Robert Hanft and is now in my rr collection. |

Built by Baldwin in September of 1900 as CM&StP Vauclain compound 4-6-0 #357, it sserved for nearly 50 years before being reitred and scrapped. Along the way, it carried many numbers - renumbered in 3/1907 to #1707, renumbered in 9/1912 to #4307, renumbered and simplified in 2/1921 to #2857, renumbered in 6/1938 to #1079. According to the Baldwin records compiled by Albert Weber III, the loco was supposedly scrapped in Mcrch of 1950 but this photo has a date listed as 1952. One of them is incorrect. No photographer was listed. |
