LATL Trolley #1160 - Los Angeles Transit Lines

Description:

LATL (Los Angeles Transit Lines) trolley #1160 was a Type F streetcar that is now part of the collection at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, California (formerly Orange Empire Rwy Museum) where it was moved in 1959 for preservation. It was originally built for the Los Angeles Rwy as LARY #18 but rebuilt and renumbered for the LATL. The color slide was taken by rail fan C.D. Norton and is now in my rr collection.

Passenger Station

Description:

Constructed in 1892 by the California Southern Railroad, the station in Perris, California, was built in the Queen Anne architectural style. This line was originally part of a proposed transcontinental line, but the southern end of the line, heading to San Diego, was repeatedly washed out and the city of Perris was no longer a junction, but rather just another stop on what would become the Santa Fe Railway's San Jacinto Branch. A short section of the old California Southern remains, and is today the rail line to the nearby Orange Empire Railway Museum.

This car ended up at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California (now known as the Southern California Rwy Museum). No photographer was listed for this color slide which is now in my rr collection.

OERM 41

Description:

OERM 41 is a GE switcher, model unknown, at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, CA. Date is approximate. One other reference called it a 20-tonner but that option isn't available for this site. Note that both trucks are connected with side rods and the hoods appear smaller than those for, say, a 44- or 45-tonner. The unit was coupled to a former Union Pacific, offset side hopper. Thanks to Steve Young for his helpful information.

NCCC 601

Description:

NCCC 601 (New Cornelia Copper Company) is a side-dump car, apparently, but I had no way of knowing if it was a DIFCO or not. If I read the lettering right, this car was built in 1916! Note the arch-bar trucks. That seems to be either an advertisement or an elaborate builder's plate at the right edge. Regardless, this was an unusual item or exhibit as part of the Orange Empire Railway Museum at Perris, CA in summer 1991.

OER 104, engineer's side view

Description:

OER 104 is a Baldwin diesel switcher, part of the Orange Empire Railway Museum's collection. This may be an S12 or VO-1000 but I don't know for sure. Date is an estimate. We were there about three times from 1991-1993, and we had a wonderful time each time, even though it was about a 200-mile round trip from Edwards AFB, my duty station at the time. I don't know much about this unit except that it's a Baldwin switcher and I wasn't about to risk getting yelled at or ordered to leave by getting too close to these exhibits! More info about this one, and other Baldwin diesels, is available at the "Baldwin Diesel Zone", or http://baldwindiesels.railfan.net/

My youngest son, SP U25B 3100, and me!

Description:

My youngest son was five years old when we took this journey to the OERM in June 1991 (estimated). He may have been a bit overwhelmed at the giant (!) locomotive he was holding onto! I think it was so special, that he's trusting me by holding on to my pants leg. That's my boy!
