DRGW 2-8-8-2 #3402 - Denver & Rio Grande Western
Description:
What a powerful and massive locomotive - Denver and Reio Grande Western 2-8-8-2 #3402. Built by ALCo-Schenectady in December of 1912 as the mallet compound, DRG #1062, it was renumbered in 1924 after the DRGW re-organization to DRGW 3402. Later in 1943, it had a new boiler installed and the slide valves replaced by the piston variety. After serving for nearly 36 years, the massive loco was scrapped in August of 1948. What a pile of steel it would have made! Rebuilt specs - 57" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 26x 40" high pressure cylinders, 32x57" low pressure cylinders, engine wt of 482,500 lb, massive tractive effort of 95,244 lb. The photo is from the Tom Klinger collection. No date was given so an apporimate one was used.

DRGW 2-8-2ng 473 & 486 Double Heading
Description:
Great narrow gauge action shot of Denver & Rio Grande Western 2-8-2 #473 & 486 double heading a string of mostly flatcars. DRGW #473 was built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1923. The narrow gauge Mikado worked until being retired and eventually sold to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge in March of 1961. DRGW #486 was built by Baldwin (serial #58587) in 1925 and lasted until retirement and dontaed to the Royal Gorge Park for display. Not over though, since it was traded to Durango & Silverton for #499 in 1999 and rebuilt. It ran for the first time on DSNG in August of 2000. No location or photographer was listed. Although the date stamp on the slide is April, 1974, it appears more like early 1950's photo.

DRGW 2-8-2ng 473 & 486 Double Heading
Description:
Not sure why these two double heading narrow gauge Denver & Rio Grande Western Mikados have stopped at this unknown location, but it appears the crew members will be discussing something. DRGW #473 was built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1923 (serial #64984) while DRGW 486 was built by Baldwin in 1925 (serial # 58587). After retirement, both eventually ended up on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RR although #486 had a layover as a display piece for awhile in the Royal Gorge Park. No exact date, location or photographer was given but it appears that it was taken in the early 1950's.
