This was the only time I ever saw the 614. 602 was part of the regular pool power but I am not sure where 614 was assigned, but would guess possilby Chicago.
And beyond, in this case, ifi I recall, to tidewater.
Amtraks Palmetto is on its last lap into Alexandria and DC as it rolls through Woodbridge VA on the RF&P.
One of the more interesting Amtrak operations was the Auto Train. They took over the failed train after Auto Train Corp went under. It was a chance to see Amtraks name on the side of freight equipment-they had a fleet of auto racks-and also some of Amtraks most unusual power, their fleet of GE P30CHs, known affectionately as "pooches." Heres a pair southbound out of Lorton.
Amtrak had both bi level and tri level auto racks for the Auto Train. Heres one of the bi levels headed south.
An Amtrak tri level rack heads south. Note the high speed trucks.
The great dome Mountain View ran on the Auto Train for a while in the 80s, here southbound at Woodbridge
The RF&P was a slingshot for trains in both directions, a quick ride from the DC area and northeastern connections, to Rickmond and the south. Heres a northbound approaching a crossing in Woodbridge VA
A northbound Amtrak train comes off the steel bridge over the Occoquan River near Woodbridge. This was a good location, as it was easy to access by a crossing at the north end, or later in the day, from adjacent US 1, seen to the right of the train.
One of the last assignments for unique to Amtrak GE P30CHs w`s the Auto Train. Here it is coming off the Occoquan River, just out of Lorton, settling into a quick ride down the RF&P.
Amtrak inherited a fleet of auto racks from Auto Train when it took over that operation. They typically were put on the rear of the train, as we see here at Woodbridge VA. Todays train has 34 cars. My notes dont break down the consist, but Id say about 24 of them are racks. It made for an impressive looking train.
Auto Train rolls off the big steel bridge over the Occoquan River on the RF&P as it gets underway for its overnight trip to Florida. Power is a trio of Amtraks unusual P30CHs with 42 cars.
Auto Train behind P30 CH 721 crosses Occoquan Creek at Woodbridge VA
One of the nice things of living in Northern Virginia was the additional Amtrak action to photograph on weekends. This would possibly be the northbound Colonial.
A northbound morning commute pauses at Woodbridge VA in November 1994 with V04 pushing a half dozen coaches, which are actually Budd Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs) converted to non-powered status.
Looking down the flank of VRE V21, we're stopped at Woodbridge VA, the doors have opened and patrons are dashing for their cars. The parking lot is about to become very sporty. This was my normal stop when I rode VRE- but I opted to go all the way to Fredericksburg when I won a cab ride drawing offered by the line.
The Crab Shack Restaurants are packed on this early November Day along the Potomac River Basin as a CQ in Blue Leads one last time!

All of today's pictures were shot from a Waverunner. That's why some look cockeyed. Wave rolls you and the camera. Lots of these waverunner shots look like the train is going up a grade.
