Lehigh River Bridge Collapse |

Passenger and freight railroad traffic was halted as heavy thunderstorms pounded the region causing landslides, flooded tracks and washed away many bridges the night of Feb. 27 into Feb. 28, 1902. One of the worst disasters from that terrifying rainstorm took place in White Haven. A Lehigh Valley Rail Road bridge crossing the Lehigh River collapsed, killing two railroaders from Wilkes-Barre. The iron bridge built by Joseph Hendler, of Wilkes-Barre, opened in 1901 at a cost of $260,000 to construct. The bridge was serviced by the Lehigh Valley Rail Road to transport coal, lumber, ice during the winter and early spring months, and passenger cars between Wilkes-Barre and Mauch Chunk. Six people drowned, including a conductor and a brakeman for the Lehigh Valley Rail Road when the White Haven bridge collapsed. “James Fisher, of 64 Chester St., Wilkes-Barre, and James McGuire of Miners Mills, Lehigh Valley railroaders, were washed away with the breaking of the bridge at Bridgeport, White Haven, and carried down the raging Lehigh River,” the Wilkes-Barre Leader reported March 1, 1902. “Both men were busy placing loaded cars on the bridge to hold it in place. The cars were sent on the bridge by a flying switch and the two men were on the cars to set the brakes and stop the cars at the proper place,” the Wilkes-Barre Record reported March 3, 1902. As Fisher and McGuire were on the second span of the bridge, a dam up river gave way causing a wall of ice and river to tear into the bridge. “Two spans of the bridge collapsed, forming a big letter ‘V’ with the loaded cars at the bottom and the men in the wreck,” the Record reported. Engineer John Pursell, of Wilkes-Barre, escaped death as he was thrown from the bridge but managed to cling onto an iron rail that had not collapsed. This is a C.L. Andrews photo. |
