Title:
PRR 4-4-0 #1223 - Pennsylvania RR
Description:
This former PRR American type locomotive was built by the Altoona shops has a "birth" date of 11/8/1905 (serial #1399). It had 68" drivers, 20.5"x26" cylinders and could generate 175 psi of boiler pressure. The tractive effort of this early locomotive was a limiting 23,900 lb as cars and trains got heavier. Taken by Laurence Bree Walker at the Strasburg Rail Road where it was restored, this locomotive served as tourist train power until moving across the street as a static display in the RR Museum of Pennyslvania in 1989 when it couldn't pass the FRA thickness standard without major rebuild. The day in 1960 is approximate. Can anyone tell me what the car is in front of the loco???

"John Stevens," 0-4-0, 1963
Description:
Vintage. Here is an original photo that I took at the Strasburg Railroad site in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, on 11 August 1963. Shown here is a replica of the "John Stevens ~ First Steam Locomotive ~ 1825." This replica was fabricated at the Altoona Works during 1925. Despite the pistons and cog wheels, this locomotive is basically jusr a wagon with a boiler and a water barrel. Not much attention was paid to crew comfort either! This replica is now on display in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

PRR Wooden Coach #3556
Description:
Beautifully restored Pennsylvania open platform heavyweight coach car sits in the afternoon sun. Although originally identified as #3566 due to a sunspot on the number, I believe this is actually #3556 which has been preserved at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and was loaned to the Strasburg Railroad at times. Built by the PRR Altoona Shops in 1886, it's an excellent example of an early open platform wooden coach car. Most were destroyed by fires during train accidents so this is a remarkable car.

"Strasburg Rail Road," Page 19, 1969
Description:
Here is page two of a four-page camera study by William Moedinger entitled "Strasburg Rail Road." It was published originally in the May 1969 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 19. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Dependable 0-6-0 No. 31 is seen here with a westbound train of four wooden coaches." SRC engine #31 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1908. According to Gary Everhart, "it has worn several numbers through the years": originally it was Grand Trunk Western's #1708; then Canadian National's #7157 circa 1923, renumbered CN #7240 in 1952, and renumbered CN #7312 in 1957; then purchased, reconditioned, and renumbered SRC #31 in 1960 ~ some 52 years after it first hit the rails!

PRR 1737 into 3750, K-4S, 1972
Description:
Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, on 26 May 1972. In the foreground is a schizophrenic Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive. The Keystone on the smokebox door reads "3750, but the number under the cab's window reads "1737." In actuality, though, this is PRR engine #3750 ~ a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1920, renumbered "1737" in 1958, and presently on display as number "3750" at the Museum.

They had #89 facing EAST during this visit in 1973. For most of my visits to Strasburg, the locomotives are always pointed west. BTW, that's PRR H-1 Consolidation 2846 to the left of Number 89.

Twyla Jean King, 1973
Description:
RRMP. Here is an original photo that I took at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, on 30 June 1973. Shown here is my friend Ms. Twyla Jean King of Middletown, Pennsylvania, posing on a four-wheel handcar that was built around 1890 and owned by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. Partially visible in the background is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7688, an H-10S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Lima Locomotive Works during September of 1915.
