PRR 4616, I-1SA, 1956 |
| Description: |
#4616 & #4243. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken near Shamokin, Pennsylvania, on 14 September 1956. Shown here (F to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4616 and #4243. Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4616 was constructed as an I-1S in September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in February of 1937, and retired in August of 1959. #4243 was built as an I-1S in May of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in December of 1943, and retired in March of 1957. The Brakeman's re-filling #4243's tender with water. Given the placement of this photo in the series, the implication is that these locomotives were uncoupled from the ore train, went to the water tower, recoupled with the ore train, and then proceeded on their journey. Also note the "doghouse" on the tender, the full-empty gauge on the water tower, and the silver-colored telephone box visible at the far right. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-33). |

"Conquering The Alleghenies," Back Cover, 1988 |
| Description: |
Here is the back cover of a six-page cover article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Conquering The Alleghenies In 1923." It was published originally on the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 53, Number 2, 1988. Photo by Bud Rothaar. Photo Caption: "These homely, rough-riding 'hippos' were a sturdy breed. In fact, I1sa Decapods had the distinction of being the last locomotives in steam when Pennsy finally achieved 100-percent diesel and electric operation. In November 1957, Big Steam's last stand in PRR road-haul service was on the iron ore trains headed for the furnaces of Bethlehem Steel at Bethlehem, Pa. Here, Baldwin-built I1sa 4407 doubleheads with a sister 2-10-0 upgrade near Shamokin, Pa., in the mid-1950's. Most likely, two more of their clan are shoving on the rear." PRR engine #4407 is an I-1SA "Decapod" built by Baldwin as an I-1S during January of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1937, and retired in October of 1959 after 36 years of faithful service. |
