Rare ATSF 4-4-6-2 #1300 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:
So rare is this unusual 4-4-6-2 wheel configuration for a "compound Mallet" that the RRPA data base had no classification for it. Built by Baldwin in August of 1909 as one of two for the ATSF, the oil burning loco and its sister had an oddball combination of dead-end variants in its feed water heater, combustion chamber, and superheater which were compromised by other design elements. After unsuccesfully working in both passengeer and freight service, the pair were converted to a more conventional 4-6-2 in August of 1915 (#1300) and October of 1915 (#1301), thus ending this oddball configuration. Original specs - serial #33708, class 1300, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 24x28" high pressure cylinders, 38x28" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 376,450 lb and tractive effort of 53,697 lb.

It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and was delivered carrying road number 1. It served the Greenbrier & Eastern or 5 years before the C&O absorbed the G&E in 1928. It was renumbered C&O #2931. In 1934, the C&O sold it to Campbell's Creek Railroad where it became their CCR #10. The engine was retired and assumedly scrapped in 1953. This is a Baldwin builder's photo.

GN 2-10-2 #2100 - Great Northern
Description:
Beautiful 1923 Baldwin builder's photo of the first of 45 2-10-2 Santa Fe type locomotives that were on the Great Northern roster. Specifics - Q-1, 63" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 31x32" cylinders, engine weight of 428,340 lb, impressive tractive effort of 87,131 lb. According to Steamlocomotive.com " Big engines in every respect, these Santa Fes had the Belpaire firebox beloved by the Great Northern, 15" (381 mm) piston valves, and lots of weight on the drivers. Their tube & flues had large diameters and the 60 superheater flues were among the most in any boiler. A smallish grate area meant much less to an oil-fired class and they had few rivals in the adhesion weight they could throw into hauling a train. They were rated at 3,000 tons of trailing load (75 cars) over the mountainous Montana profile between Whitefish and Cutbank. Most were oil burners as shown in the specs. Delivered with 370 sq ft of heating surface and 5,499 sq ft total, the class later added 39 sq ft of arch tubes and a trailing-truck booster developing 12,200 lb." After 27 years of hard service, this locomotive was scrapped in 1950.

SC 2-6-2 #103 - Sumter & Choctaw Rwy
Description:
Baldwin built this sharp looking 2-6-2 Prairie type steam locomotive as Sumter & Choctaw #103 in October of 1925 (serial #58754). After serving the SC for nearly 37 years, the loco was sold it to the Empire State Railway Museum of Middletown, NY in 1962. Placed in storage in 1975, the 103, still owned by the ESRM, moved in 1970 to the Valley Railroad tourist line in Essex, Connecticut, where it ran for five years before being placed on display. In 1986, the ESRM tranferred ownership to the Railroad Museum of New England (RMNE), the latter then operating the Naugatuck Railroad. In 2009, Pincus reported, the 103 was trucked up the road at 50-55 mph, "going faster than it ever had on rails" to be cosmetically restored and placed on display. Surprisingly in 2025, there is a campaign to restore it to active service again. Hope they can!!!
