Description:  CSXT 5457 and 5490 along with two SD50s and two SD40-2s lead a very long mixed freight along the banks of the Youghiogheny River on a beautiful January day in 2008. This one lane road runs inbetween the river and the two track mainline with no room to pass which makes for interesting situations sometimes.

WMR Youghiogheny Bridge
Title:  WMR Youghiogheny Bridge
Description:  This is sometimes called the bridge to nowhere, because the other end of it has been torn down, so it just drops off. The right side was started but never completed. All of the piers for bridges of the Western Maryland Railway were originally built to accommodate double tracks in the event that the railroad had enough traffic to warrant a second line. The WMR was in constant competition with the B&O railroad, so the extra track ended up never being built. This bridge and particular section of this railroad was abandoned in 1975, after the WM merger with Chessie System, when it was determined that this rail line was redundant and not needed.

Title:  WMR Casselman Bridge
Description:  This is the bridge that took the Western Maryland Railway out of Confluence east towards the mountains. It has found a second life as part of the Great Allegheny Passage bike/hike trail. Below it is the Casselman River. The speed lettering on these bridges is withering away a little bit more every year. Photograph it while you still can.

The Great Allegheny Passage is part of the larger Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHNST) corridor, one of only 11 so designated in the country. PHNST is a network of trails between the Chesapeake Bay and the Ohio River.
