The Lake Shore Limited

I was going to take the Lake Shore from NYC to Chicago but decided to take an earlier Empire Service train to Utica, get off, railfan for a while, the catch the Lake Shore. Glad I was younger because today I'd freeze my sweet bippy off.

An eastbound blasts through Utica station with two ex PC units and one CR picked up after Auto Train couldnt pay for it.

An ex EL GP 35 trails on this eastbound coal train rolling through Utica on the NYC. EL called at the ex DLW yard, just west of here, when there was still an EL.

An RS 3 works the Utica yard, making up a train that will go out later in the day. Note the St Lawrence box car, one of a per diem fleet that was popular at the time.

The Bangor & Aroostook had a fleet of these cars promoting their home state of Maine, and they were a common sight around the northeast. This one is on Conrail at Utica.

For some reason the 6 axle U boats seemed to avoid me, and I never caught one in an action shot, but once in a while Id get on in a yard. Here we see 6810 from an Empire Service train at Utica. Also of note is another vanished breed, the end cab switcher, this one an SW 9, in the yard.

OK, it's not Minnesota. I took this while out east for a wedding.

In July 1983 I rode a trip on the NYSW that originated in Utica, and went to the Waterman Conservation Center in Sherburne. It was a fun trip, running behind Alcos, and true to NYSW form, we did some switching in Utica on the way back.
