The Northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Title: The Northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Description: Four Southern Railway E8A units were on Train No. 2 – the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT – as it made its way out of New Orleans at NO&NE milepost 191, the big curve at the Press Drive Underpass. The train consisted of locomotives 6914, 6913, 6910 and 6902 with eight cars: baggage-dormitory 711, coaches 836, 822 and 832, 10-6 sleepers 2021 YADKIN RIVER and Amtrak 2624 PACIFIC PATROL (the Transcontinental car), diner 3309 and dome-parlor 1613. This was a great spot to photograph No. 2, as its schedule was predictable (almost always 7:27-28 a.m.) and the sun was in the right location, but it only ran on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays ?? The train and the railroad are long gone, but the memories remain... and the sound was amazing!

Westbound SP on Huey P. Long Bridge
Title: Westbound SP on Huey P. Long Bridge
Description: Ten Southern Pacific locomotives were hauling a westbound train up the Huey P. Long Bridge, on its way to the railroad’s AVONDALE YARD at the west end of the bridge. The first five units (SP SD45R 7546 SD45 8978, SD45R 7517, SD45R 7550, SD40T-2 8321) had just delivered a stack train to the Norfolk Southern while the second five (GP30 5009, GP35 6653, GP20R 4102, GP9 3877 and 3816) were a set of transfer units on a train from the CSX. The two sets of power were combined at the east end of the bridge, so the SP crew on the road power could bring the transfer run back to Avondale after the CSX crew delivered it.

ATSF S-LACH-2-24 on the KCS
Title: ATSF S-LACH-2-24 on the KCS
Description: During the massive floods which inundated the midwestern U.S. in the summer of 1993, railroads detoured trains on an unprecedented scale, with the Santa Fe running about two dozen Chicago-California trains via New Orleans between 30 July and 8 August.

ATSF S-LACH-2-24 was a low-priority intermodal train from Los Angeles to Chicago, and here it was at Alliance Avenue in Frellsen – on the western outskirts of New Orleans – in the midst of a leisurely 10-day trip via Dallas and the Kansas City Southern, New Orleans and the Norfolk Southern. At this location, S-LACH-2-24 was utilizing KCS trackage rights over the Illinois Central for the last seven miles of its journey from Dallas to the NS. The train had ATSF SD40-2 5189, SF30C 9523 and SF30C 9546 with 48 cars.

GM&O 50 (AMTK 800539)
Title: GM&O 50 (AMTK 800539)
Description: Private car GM&O 50 (AMTK 800539) was on the Kansas City Southern-Amtrak interchange just outside of New Orleans, en route from its home on the New Orleans Public Belt to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal via the KCS, and it left on the westbound SUNSET two days later. The car had been built by American Car & Foundry in 1928 as Gulf, Mobile & Northern 50 and was assigned to the railroad’s president, Isaac B. Tigrett. It was subsequently owned by the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio and the Illinois Central Gulf before going into private ownership.

In 1990 the car was acquired by Mr. Tigrett’s great nephew, who is also named Isaac B. Tigrett. The younger Mr. Tigrett was a co-founder of the HARD ROCK CAFE and the HOUSE OF BLUES, both of which had venues in New Orleans. When this photo was taken, Mr. Tigrett was spending a lot of time in New Orleans and used this car for entertaining while he was here. At first, he kept the car at NOUPT, but he eventually leased a siding from the NOPB near the French Quarter.
