BO 4-6-2 #5222 - Baltimore & Ohio |
| Description: |
If the date on this photo taken by rail photographer Max Miller is correct, this may be the last photo taken before it was retired and scrapped. Still looks good but diesels displaced many fine steam locomotives due to efficiency and cost. ALCo-Brooks built this 4-6-2 Pacific type steam loco in September of 1919 as Baltimore & Ohio #5222 (serial #61278, class P-5). After nearly 37 yers of service, the loco was retired in October of 1956 and presumedly scrapped. Specs - 74" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 288,000 lb and tractive effort of 40,200 lb. The photo is now in my rr collection. |
