Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Title:  Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Description:  We learned on the tour that this is the oldest and smallest locomotive in the Age of Steam Roundhouse collection. It was built by H.K. Porter Company in April of 1897 as Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T saddletank #14 (serial #1726). After the 1901 sale of Carnegie Steel to U.S. Steel, the locomotive was transferred to the Duquesne mill and renumbered #727. It was later displayed at Pittsburgh's Station Square, donated to Sewickley, and finally sold to the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in 2013, where it was cosmetically restored. The correct reporting mark for this loco was at one time CSX but that was discontinued many years ago.

Title:  Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Description:  When the diminutive saddletank loco went on display at Riverside Park in Sewickley, PA, the little loco was given the name "Tom Thumb". It lasted for nearly 25 years as a children's playground at the park.

Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Title:  Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Description:  Upon inspection at the Age of Steam Roundhouse, it was determined that this loco had probably been converted to burning oil rather than coal at an earlier date since it had no grates or ashpans by the time it reached the Roundhouse.

Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Title:  Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Description:  The 14" drivers on the loco were definitely not built for speed but for traction. Note the sand tubes in front and behind the wheel set to give it added traction. Other specs - modest 165 psi boiler pressure, 12x16" cylinders, engine wt of 23.5 tons and modest tractive force of 11,800 lb. It is non-operational bu makes a nice display in the Roundhouse.

Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Title:  Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Description:  When the loco did burn coal, there would have been a side or rear coal bin on the saddletank loco to hold the fuel. Water was held in the "saddletank" surrounding the boiler. It may have had a tender built for it later.

Title:  Carnegie Steel 0-4-0T #14
Description:  The cab was very small and would have had just the engineer for yard service at the steel mill.
