In this context, it's rockin' 'n' rollin' on the New York & Long Branch line with a nine-car passenger train. Many thanks to Mr. Glen James Smith for identifying this locomotive correctly.

Kern. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken in Bay Head Junction, New Jersey, on 7 September 1953. The two steam locomotives at the right (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3884 and #5367. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics" built in Juniata. #3884 was built in July of 1923 and retired in May of 1956, while #5367 was built in May of 1924 and retired in October of 1956. The brightly-colored diesel-electric locomotive at the left is Fairbanks-Morse "Train Master" demonstrator #TM-1, built in April of 1953, rated at 2,400 horsepower, and auditioning with the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Both are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #5894 was constructed during March of 1951. Note the "newer" and "older" paint schemes. This A-A set has just crossed the Rockville Bridge with a 12-car passenger train, and is en route from New York City to Pittsburgh. The slide mount is annotated "Train 25" so, in those days, it was called "The Duquesne."

Both are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #5769 was constructed in May of 1952. This A-A set is pulling a passenger train through the Tyrone Station on its way to Altoona and points West. The plume of white smoke visible at the right marks the location of the Westvaco paper mill in beautiful downtown Tyrone. Wave to the Fireman!

Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5828 was constructed in November of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're about to pass through the Tyrone Passenger Station with a fully-loaded mineral train on its way to Enola and points East. Wave to the Engineman!

It's pulling a train of empty gondola and hopper cars out of Enola to Altoona. A small portion of the Susquehanna River is visible at the far left.

The eastbound freight train is headed by PRR engine #9662, an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in February of 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower.
