PRR: Sohlberg~> "Horseshoe Curve" ~ MAR 1941

Here is page one of an eight-page article by Harry T. Sohlberg entitled "Horseshoe Curve." It was published originally in the March 1941 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 28. Partial Caption: "Pennsy fast freight, behind an [unidentified] M-1a Mountain type, dives into the west portal of the double-track New Portage Tunnel at Gallitzin, crest of the Alleghenies. This bore was originally part of the New Portage RR., route of Pennsylvania trains before Horseshoe Curve was built in 1854."

Here is page two of an eight-page article by Harry T. Sohlberg entitled "Horseshoe Curve." It was published originally in the March 1941 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 29. The author writes that "During the five hours from 10:43 to 3:41, 27 named trains ~ including some of the most famous in the country ~ round the Curve." These "named trains" are listed in detail.

Pontin taking a photo from atop Signal Bridge #2416/7. The map by Lynn H. Westcott depicts the routes of the Allegheny Portage, New Portage, and Pennsylvania Railroads as they wind their way up, over, and down the Allegheny Mountains.

Here is page six of an eight-page article by Harry T. Sohlberg entitled "Horseshoe Curve." It was published originally in the March 1941 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 33. Top Photo: Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3733 and #1339. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics" built in Juniata. #3733 was constructed during February of 1920 and retired in April of 1956, while #1339 was built in April of 1918 and retired in February of 1956. They're pulling a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Note the illustration of an inclined plane and a two-sectioned canal boat on the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

Bottom Photo: Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4527 and #6768. #4527 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during August of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in November of 1942, and retired in June of 1953. #6768 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata during September of 1930 and retired in February of 1955. They're pulling a 110-car merchandise freight around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the "Decapod" will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assingment.
