PRR 5803, EP-22, 1960 |
| Description: |
FSF. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in March of 1960. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5803 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5803 is an EP-22 built during July of 1952 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a nine-car passenger train on their way to Harrisburg and points East. Just behind them are the crew-change building and the water tank, both of which saw service during the good ol' days when steam locomotives were marshaled here to push freights up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the summit at Gallitzin. |

All were built by GM-EMD. #5850 and #5849 are EP-20's built in August of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5803 is an EP-22 built in July of 1952 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. This A-A-A set has just come down the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a 27-car mail & express train, and is about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge before stopping at the Passenger Station for a crew change. The smokestacks of Altoona's Brick Plant are visible in the right center of the photo. |

PRR 5803, EP-22, 1965 |
| Description: |
12th Street. Here is an original photo that I took at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1965. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5803 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5803 is an EP-22 built in July of 1952 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They're pulling a New York City-bound passenger train into the Altoona Station, after having come down the Allegheny Mountains from Pittsburgh. This is the train that Mr. Samuel Walker and I rode to New York City in order to visit the New York World's Fair. The time is approximately 2:22 A.M. |
