| Description: |
7th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 8 March 1964. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7132, #9802-B, and #7004. All were built by GM-EMD. #7132 and #7004 are EFS-17M's rated at 1,750 horsepower each; #7132 was built in June of 1957 and #7004 was built in October of 1955. #9802-B is an EF-15A built in March of 1951, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in October of 1967. They're about to pass under the 7th Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Also visible (L to R) are some of the PRR's Passenger Car Shops, smokestacks for the Car Shops' Power House, the steel Water Tower (last vestige of the steam era in this part of town), the wrought-iron 4th Street Footbridge (with SOUTH Tower nestled under it at the far right), as well as several other westbound freight trains awaiting crews and orders to proceed. |
