PRR 2022, BF-16, 1964 |
| Description: |
7th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 8 March 1964. Partially visible at the left is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #2022, a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in May of 1952, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in January of 1967 after just 15 years of revenue service. It and two more "Sharks" are pulling an eastbound mixed-cargo freight train under the 7th Street Bridge and into the Altoona Yards. Partially visible at the right are PRR engines #7070 and #9766-B; they've stopped and await orders to pull a mixed-cargo freight train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. |

4th Street. Here is the first of four successive original photos that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 15 August 1964. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7070, #9648-B, and #2246. All were built by GM-EMD. #7070 is an EFS-17M built in October of 1956 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #9648-B is an EF-15A built in February of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1966. #2246 is an EF-22 built in May of 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. In this context, they've pulled a train of empty hopper cars to a point midway between the 7th Street Bridge (not shown) and the 4th Street Footbridge (visible in the distance) ~ but they've stopped, pending orders to proceed up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. |
