In this context, they've just passed under the 4th Street Footbridge and will shortly pass under the 7th Street Bridge with an ore train on its way up the West Slope of the Allegheny Mountains to the steel mills in Pittsburgh. The black water tower is all that remains from the "Age of Steam" when there was a small coal/sand/watering facility at this location. (#32 of 44) |

7th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1965. Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2533, #2532, and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #2533 and #2532 are GF-25's built by General Electric in September of 1964 and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. In this context, they're about to pass under the 7th Street Bridge with a merchandise freight train bound for Enola and points East. Visible in the center distance are some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings. |
