This solid looking 2-8-4 Berkshire was caught sitting quietly in an undisclosed yard by an unidentified rail fan. The 2-8-4 Berkshire was built by Alco-Schenectady in Frebruary of 1941 as WLE #6416 (serial #69429, class K-1). After the Nickel Plate Road took over the WLE in 1949, it was renumbered NKP #816 (class S-4) in 1952. By February of 1957, it was "laid up" (retired) at the Brwester, OH yard and eventually sold for scrap to the Luntz Iron & Steel Company in March of 1963. Specs - 69" drivers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 25x34" cylinders, engine wt of 415,000 lb and tractive force of 64,100 lb. Unfortunately, no date, location or photographer was listed for this photo now in my rr collection. An approximate location and date were used for posting.
