| Description: |
Interesting long locomotive similar to a Baldwin center cab caught sitting on an industrial spur in Indianapolis, IN. This "Hoosier" unit was built by Lima-Hamilton in September, 1951 for the Pennsylvania RR. According to Wikipeida "The LT-2500 was the final locomotive model produced by Lima-Hamilton before the company merged with the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1951. All examples of the LT-2500 locomotives were scrapped, and none are known to have been preserved." Unknown photographer |

CB&Q Mack AW Number 100 |
| Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Mack Model AW number 100, sometime in 1929, photograph by Randolph L. Kulp, Marshall Pochay collection. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society publication Burlington Bulletin Number 6, CENTERCABS, edited by Hol Wagner. Dwarfed even by the freight cars it is switching, the diminutive No. 100 works the Galesburg yard during 1929, shortly after its purchase. Inefficient in this service, the Mack was soon relegated to the Galesburg tie plant, where it put in over 20 years of uneventful service. Hol also included the following detailed history of the Mack: When the Q sought to buy its first internal combustion locomotive for switching service in 1928, it turned to none other than Mack again ( having earlier purchased gas-electric motorcar 501 in 1922 ), because EMC had nothing to offer in the switcher field. What the railroad got was a tiny 30-ton, rigid frame, four-wheel, center-cab gas-electric locomotive just over 16' long. Powered by a pair of four-cylinder. 85-hp Mack truck engines, the diminutive switcher utilized General Electric electrical equipment - generators and traction motors. Cooling radiators were mounted atop the cab roof instead of the more common "winter-front" position at the ends of the hoods. Built by Mack at its Plainfield, NJ plant in November 1928 ( c/n 172001 ), the locomotive was the first model AW turned out ( only three others followed ), and was used as a demonstrator. The Q acquired it on March 20, 1929, after testing it extensively in yard and industrial switching service at Lincoln, NE. Numbered 100, the little 170-hp center-cab machine was painted solid Pullman green with gold numbers and CB&Q initials. Immediately the 100 was assigned to Galesburg, where it worked industrial trackage and the railroad's tie plant. Designed to exert 18,000 pounds of tractive force at 30% adhesion below one mile per hour, 7,000 pounds at five miles an hour, and 4,000 pounds at 10 mph, the 100 supposedly could haul 650 tons at nine miles per hour on level track or 200 tons on a 1% grade at a lower speed. This made the locomotive inefficient in all but the lightest switching chores, so by the early 1930's the 100 was assigned strictly to the Galesburg tie plant ( and equipped with large buffer plates ). Beginning in 1932, 9000-series numbers were assigned to Q gas-electric ( and soon diesel-electric ) switching power, but the tiny 100, confined to the tie plant, was not renumbered to 9100 until October 1939. And it kept the number for just one year, because the operation department decided to differentiate tie plant switchers with their own numbers so that some unknowing dispatcher wouldn't inadvertently try to assign the little machines to regular switching duties. And so, in October 1940, the Mack AW assumed its third and final number: 8900. It continued its uneventful and little photographed life in the Galesburg tie plant until finally, in August 1952, the nearly 24-year-old locomotive was retired and scrapped. |

C&S 99518 |
| Description: |
Colorado & Southern Railway auxiliary tender 99518 at Oregon, Illinois on June 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a fantrip from Eola to Oregon and return, featuring 2-8-2 4960 working the Oregon Way Freight. About ten miles east of Oregon was a wye at Flagg Center, where the locomotive was turned for the return trip to Chicago. For the ten miles or so between Flagg Center and Oregon, the trailing combine number 3003, which also served as the regular coach/caboose on the Oregon Way Freight, was coupled next to 4960's smokebox. This resulted in a very crowded vestibule on 3003, with fans literally hanging on. Although the CB&Q had provided a couple of safety officials to control the fans, but they could not get on to the vestibule to shoo us off. I believe that is the way freight's regular Conductor seen on 99518 leading 4960 in the run around move, and he was none too pleased with the situation and the general pilfering his office ( 3003 ) received from the fans. |

NS 8078 |
| Description: |
I heard the Toledo West dispatcher give a Box 2 and Box 3 to some maintenance crew around the Ligonier area on NS, so I decided to make my w`y back. Sure enough, crawling west was a ballast cleaner, working nonetheless. I settled down at Elkhart CR 33 to get some shots of it working. NS 294 had a slow order by the men and equipment but still made it to the crossing and cleared the crossing before the ballast cleaner hit. |

| Description: |
Although an odd-shaped speeder, it nonetheless served the logging crews well as their means of transportation to and from their worksite. In the case of the more remote camps, they also transported workers and their families between camp and town. Now it serves the tourists as a way to view the Centre's displays spread around the forest. |

BN Spud Local |
| Description: |
Washington's central section is typically dry, as opposed to the part west of the Cascade Mountains. Nonetheless, traffic here is still largely agricultural, which is allowed by massive irrigation. BN runs a weekday local out of Wenatchee to Quincy, called the Spud Local since GN days, to help tap some of the traffic generated by the area's farmers. Here GP9 1702 and GP38-2 2093 sit while their crew is at lunch. The road's former GN depot is off to the right. |

I definitely wasnt planning on my first trip of the year to be to the Indy Line making up for lost progress from the last trip of the year from last year, but here I was on a very cold morning outside of tiny Houston, OH getting the last few pairs of signals I had yet to shoot trains by. I made it to the QI 174 intermediates in time to grab I131 coming west with a pair of UP units, and a good GE leading nonetheless. I never have shot a train by this pair, and hopefully, it wont be the only one before they come down. |

Gaining speed |
| Description: |
13T rolls toward the PA 706 underpass, picking up speed as it heads down the old DLW. The BNSF unit is notable, though not uncommon on this train, which seemed to get western power pretty routinely. The trailing unit is the real surprise, a B40-8. NS did not have many of these, and none purchased by NS itself. This is a legacy CR unit. |

Scenic 309 and a surprise |
| Description: |
Train 309 rolls west along the Susquehanna behind two units that would later get the "golden rodent" and become fixtures on the short lived 416 and 417 trains from Saratoga to the Bronx. Today they are headed to Buffalo with none other but an ex PC E 8 tucked in behind. |

NKP RS11 855 |
| Description: |
Nickel Plate Road RS11 855 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in February 1959 (c/n 83019) on Order S-3305 for 14 units, classed ARS-18c on the NKP. It was retired May 1, 1974. The NKP purchased a total of 35 RS-11's in three orders, none of which had dynamic brakes. The RS-11 introduced the Model 251 diesel prime mover in 1956, which addressed several problems with the earlier Model 244 diesel, most notably was crankshaft failure. The crankshaft bearing surfaces were increased in width, resulting in a longer engine block for the 251. Alco reverted to the wet block design, testing had revealed that the Model 244 dry block introduced differential thermally-induced block expansion (the block expanded unevenly when hot), which caused mis-alignment along the crankshaft axis, contributing to crankshaft failure. The turbocharger was a water-cooled Alco design which incorporated an aftercooler to provide cooler combustion air. Cooler air is denser, thus more air could be introduced into each cylinder, improving combustion efficiency. In addition, Alco re-engined two Baldwin AS-16 road switchers for the NKP with 1800 hp 251B diesels. Note how Alco had to cast the poling pockets into the frame behind the steps. |

NS 8999 Faced Her Fear, Have They? |
| Description: |
I was taking my son to the high school for registration and got caught by the train. 8999 was running long hood foward from my right to my left and that was when I noticed something different. There have only been two incidents of vandalism that I know of and none involving locomotives! JMU has been filtering back into town this week. There was when I attended JMU and still is an older street near the yard who's homes are now occupied by off campus students. Most of these houses are associated with the more "free spirited" types and have big party reputations. The CHW yard is also a short cut to and from this neighborhood from JMU's campus. This is just too clever, taking a phrase like this and placing it into context to be gang related, in my opinion. |

NS 50A |
| Description: |
Two D9-40CW's and two SD60M's lead NS 50A, a southbound unit grain train, through Spring City. A very nice consist, although early in the morning a sister train, 40A featured the Central of Georgia heritage unit. Sadly, she showed up before the sun did. However, none the less, this satisified my craving for a unit grain. |

Seaboard Coart Line's Silver Meteor |
| Description: |
See: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/editPicture.aspx?id=2697680 and http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/editPicture.aspx?id=2697681 Built by Budd for the Seaboard Air Line as a tavern - lounge observation car, 6600 - 6605 series, for use on selected N.Y. - Florida trains. The Atlantic Coast Line, Central of Georgia and Florida East Coast all had similar cars with one BIG exception... none had the oversized tail light (similar to what was used on some Burlington Budd observation cars). |
