UP 8693 and UP 8684
Title:  UP 8693 and UP 8684
Description:  A westbound UP Z train overtakes another westbound Z train. Preferably I would have liked this meet to be a bit closer, but cool none the less.

SAR Class SH-11 (Side B)
Title:  SAR Class SH-11 (Side B)
Description:  Class SH-11 (SHLJ-11) wagons entered service in 1982 and are flat wagons with solid decks and retractable twistlocks designed to transport 4 x 10ft, 2 x 20ft or 1 x 40ft containers as well as heavy road vehicles. For the road vehicle transport role each wagon comes with two bridge beams that are stowed on the sides, and with a tie-down equipment storage bin that is accessed through a hole in the deck. None of these wagons have buffers to prevent container doors from being opened, probably as a result of their dual role.

Number range 23 023 554 to 23 024 291, Length between couplers 14.482m, Length over headstocks 12.190m, Length between bogie pivot centres 9.290m, Deck height 1.090m, Width 2.600m, Tare (average) 20,240kg, Load 48,000kg, Deck area 27.5m3.

Budapest Keleti Trainshed
Title:  Budapest Keleti Trainshed
Description:  Like many big city stations around the world, Keleti is large and monumental, and has a large arched ceiling over the main concourse. It's a beautiful station, underneath all the grime, and the only thing that I dislike about it is that it doesn't appear to have central heating, or at least none which is particularly effective. As a result, I was freezing when I took this.

Ex-CSD M131.1238
Title:  Ex-CSD M131.1238
Description:  M131.1238 is an M131 Class railbus, later reclassified a Class 801 under the 1988 renumbering scheme. These units were produced from 1948 until 1956 by Tatra, eventually totalling 549 for the fleet, a very large number when you consider that none remain in service today, as all were withdrawn by 1984, a service lifespan of only 36 years, with some serving less than 30. Their small size may have had something to do with this, as they could only seat 48 people to a modern 810 Classs 55, plus 40 standees, along with their maximum speed of 60Km/h compared with 80Km/h for an 810. Other antiquated features would have been their mechanical transmissions (compared to the 810s hydraulic transmission), and their antiquated Tatra T 301 engines, which were based on the old Tatra T111 from Tatras World War II-era trucks, that in spite of having 14.8 liters displacement from 12 cylinders, only produced about 155-160 horsepower.

Description:  Counter-lounge car 8380 DIXIE TRAVELER was originally Maine Central diner-bar-lounge 15 MERRYMEETING. It was one of four such cars (MEC 15-16, Boston & Maine 70-71) built under Pullman-Standard Lot W6778 in 1947 for service from Boston to Portland and Bangor, but none of these cars served their original owners for very long. The MEC cars were sold to the Chicago & Eastern Illinois in 1951, while the B&M cars went to the Wabash in 1957.

The MEC cars became C&EI 603 MERRY JOURNEY and 604 MERRY MEETING with no interior changes, then went to the Louisville & Nashville in 1959 where they were remodeled as 28-seat diner/18-seat lounge cars 2800 DIXIE TRAVELER and 2801 DIXIE JOURNEY. The L&N remodeled the cars once again in 1964 as 14-seat lunch-counter/8-seat diner/18-seat lounge cars, with no name change. The B&M/WAB cars were retired by the N&W in 1970, but the former MEC/C&EI/L&N cars went to Amtrak as the 8380 and 8381, and were retired in 1977. DIXIE TRAVELER was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED. (approximate date)

CB&Q Class LO-2C 87551
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-2C 87551
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-2C 87551 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: Quite pleased with the performance of the Airslide cars, the Burlington continued to place regular orders for lots of 50 or 60 more of the 2,600 cubic-foot cars through the early 1960's. Following the 60 Class LO-2B cars of 1960 came 50 LO-2C's in 1961 ( Q 87550 - 87599 ) and 50 LO-2D's in 1962 ( Q 87600 - 87639 and C&S 810 - 819 ). A couple of tiny spotting features differentiate these cars. First, the vibrator brackets of the 1961 cars and all subsequent Airslides are mounted on oval pads somewhat larger than the rectangular pads used on all previous production. Then, on the 1962 cars, the number of rivets employed on the vertical channel braces at the ends of each car side is reduced considerably from previous standard practice; where earlier cars have 26 rivets per channel brace, the 1962 LO-2D's have but 12, and the bottom connection to the side sill is welded rather than riveted. Trivial differences, but interesting nonetheless.
