PRR West Philadelphia, #1 of 2, 1943
Title:  PRR West Philadelphia, #1 of 2, 1943
Description:  Here is the first of two photos taken by Mr. Harold M. Lambert. It was published originally in the December 1943 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 22. Photo Caption: "The smokiest, dirtiest place on a railroad is the engine terminal. But because the locomotive personifies the railroad to most people, the roundhouse would easily top any popularity poll, and, as shown by these photos at West Philadelphia on the Pennsylvania Railroad, the engine terminal is extremely photogenic. The roundhouse itself is not so much a garage for locomotives as a place for light repairs, and in these days of heavy traffic [during WWII], the railroads are turning locomotives so fast that none of them tarry in roundhouses any longer than absolutely necessary to keep them in first-class operating condition." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #198, an E-6S (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata during August of 1914 and retired in April of 1951 after 37 years of faithful service..

SP Diner 10264
Title:  SP Diner 10264
Description:  SP 10264 - The dining unit of 3-unit articulated coffee shop-kitchen-diner 10262-10263-10264. The car was retired in 1968 and was one of about 100 cars sold to Judge Roy Hofheinz in Houston for use as a motel in the ASTRODOMAIN hotel complex next to the Houston ASTRODOME (which explains why it was in Houston); but none of the cars were ever used and most were scrapped. This car and the 10265-10266-10267 were built by Pullman-Standard in 1949 for service on the SHASTA DAYLIGHT.

NS 2545
Title:  NS 2545
Description:  Before a large swath of storms would strike the area and wreak havoc later this day, NS 130 heads through Vance, AL under deceptively blue skies. NS has retired these former show ponies and venerable work horse for rebuilding in the SD70ACC program though NS 2556-2580 were put up for sale outright in January 2020. 2545 is seen passing one of more subtle landmarks to be found in Vance aside from the large intimidating Mercedes Benz plant. I decided to work this local lumber mills sign in on an otherwise random image. My other lenses kept fogging up internally but the 100x400 gave me no problems other than it was mostly over kill for the images I was taking but a lens is better than none at all.

NS 8999 Faced Her Fear, Have They?
Title:  NS 8999 Faced Her Fear, Have They?
Description:  I was taking my son to the high school for registration and got caught by the train. 8999 was running long hood foward from my right to my left and that was when I noticed something different. There have only been two incidents of vandalism that I know of and none involving locomotives! JMU has been filtering back into town this week. There was when I attended JMU and still is an older street near the yard who's homes are now occupied by off campus students. Most of these houses are associated with the more "free spirited" types and have big party reputations. The CHW yard is also a short cut to and from this neighborhood from JMU's campus. This is just too clever, taking a phrase like this and placing it into context to be gang related, in my opinion.

PRR 4728, P-5A, 1961
Title:  PRR 4728, P-5A, 1961
Description:  Meadows. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Engine Service Tracks at Meadows Yard near Kearny, New Jersey, on 28 January 1961. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #4719 and six more units whose numbers are not recorded. #4728 is a P-5A (2-C-2) built by Baldwin-Westinghouse during December of 1932, rated at 3,750 horsepower, and retired in August of 1963 after 31 years of faithful service. Looks to me like all of these units are "Out of Service" since none of their pantographs are in the "up" position. ("Stoneborobranch"; #30 of 32)

SAR Class SH-11 (Side A)
Title:  SAR Class SH-11 (Side A)
Description:  Class SH-11 (SHLJ-11) wagons entered service in 1982 and are flat wagons with solid decks and retractable twistlocks designed to transport 4 x 10ft, 2 x 20ft or 1 x 40ft containers as well as heavy road vehicles. For the road vehicle transport role each wagon comes with two bridge beams (absent on this one) that are stowed on the sides, and with a tie-down equipment storage bin that is accessed through a hole in the deck. None of these wagons have buffers to prevent container doors from being opened, probably as a result of their dual role.
Number range 23 023 554 to 23 024 291, Length between couplers 14.482m, Length over headstocks 12.190m, Length between bogie pivot centres 9.290m, Deck height 1.090m, Width 2.600m, Tare (average) 20,240kg, Load 48,000kg, Deck area 27.5m3.

BEDT 0-6-0T #13 - Brooklyn East District Terminal
Title:  BEDT 0-6-0T #13 - Brooklyn East District Terminal
Description:  Built by H. K. Porter in 1916 for the US Navy Fleet Supply South Brooklyn, this little tank engine eventually moved over to the Brooklyn East District Terminal to work shuffling cars there until retirement around 1962. The once coal burner was converted some earlier time to being an oil burner. After retirement, it ended up at the RR Museum of Pennsylvania as an outdoor static display. I'm not sure of its status since 2010 as it doesn't appear on the latest museum rosters. The date for the photo is an approximate one as none was listed.

Title:  ex-Southern Pacific*
Description:  A wheel tractor-scraper parked on an ex-SP abandoned spur. *This spur serviced Basso Distribution and a lumber yard, Im unsure what other, if any, businesses this spur serviced. None of the rails have been pulled and they go into heavy overgrowth, this spur dead ends at Pleasant Valley Rd and is directly behind the businesses on the west side of Dawson Dr between Pleasant Valley Rd and the Lewis Rd / CA-34 overpass. This end of the spur was abandoned years ago, but the other end which connects to the Union Pacific main line siding may still be used periodically to deliver lumber and park UP right-of-way equipment.
