Dash Dueces and Company
Title:  Dash Dueces and Company
Description:  Although a piece of fence is included in this image, the sound and circumstance was too much to ignore. In the land of widecabs, even GEVO's to say it simpler, when you have none present, its exactly that, a gift. After this night, I saw both of these units leave town on trains, the 7922 left on the TACBLU, and the 7146 had the NTWKCK.

Title:  Q211 passes an old church
Description:  Q211 travels south towards Columbia on the ex-CN&L tracks. This is about all there is to Kinards, a couple of old buildings and this neat old church. The shot is better for trains coming northbound, but as luck would have it, none were in the picture.

This is the largest PRR Signal Bridge still standing in the state of Ohio. Its too bad Conrail had to switch out the PL heads for trilights! Nonetheless, its still cool!

AMTK 8380
Title:  AMTK 8380
Description:  Counter-lounge car 8380 DIXIE TRAVELER was originally Maine Central diner-bar-lounge 15 MERRYMEETING. It was one of four such cars (MEC 15-16, Boston & Maine 70-71) built under Pullman-Standard Lot W6778 in 1947 for service from Boston to Portland and Bangor, but none of these cars served their original owners for very long. The MEC cars were sold to the Chicago & Eastern Illinois in 1951, while the B&M cars went to the Wabash in 1957.

The MEC cars became C&EI 603 MERRY JOURNEY and 604 MERRY MEETING with no interior changes, then went to the Louisville & Nashville in 1959 where they were remodeled as 28-seat diner/18-seat lounge cars 2800 DIXIE TRAVELER and 2801 DIXIE JOURNEY. The L&N remodeled the cars once again in 1964 as 14-seat lunch-counter/8-seat diner/18-seat lounge cars, with no name change. The B&M/WAB cars were retired by the N&W in 1970, but the former MEC/C&EI/L&N cars went to Amtrak as the 8380 and 8381, and were retired in 1977. DIXIE TRAVELER was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED. (approximate date)

CRIP 2-8-2 #2700 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Title:  CRIP 2-8-2 #2700 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:  This loco has the dubious honor of being the very last 2-8-2 Mikado ever built for the rock Island Line. Alco-Schenectady assembled it in April fo 1927. Sadly, none of the 240+ Mikados have survived. Specs - 63" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine wt of 355,600 lb and tractive effort of 68,227 lb. With an added booster, the te increased by 11,244 lb and when it was converted to an oil burner, the engine weight became 350,500 lb. The loco was retired and sold for scrap in October of 1952 after 25 years of service. This is an R.H. Carlson photo.

WE 5411
Title:  WE 5411
Description:  The sun was essentially directly over the tracks at this time, so I wanted to make sure that I shot the westbound in a location where the tracks werent directly east/west. With Elton Road closed, I had to drive about 2 miles further north to Hackett Road where the tracks angle more north than run west. I drove pretty leisurely and wasnt aware that the train was directly behind me the entire time. I was quite surprised when I heard the sharp K5LLA down at the next crossing down, and was even more surprised to see the other 2 tunnel motors hosted on the roster leading the train. While I would have rather seen the DRGW lead, the UP one is pretty cool nonetheless. WE 237 was the symbol, and this train was basically a counterpart of the inbound train (heading to Carey) but this one had no stone cars.

CSX O921-29 Power Move
Title:  CSX O921-29 Power Move
Description:  One of the true defining elements of the Homestead Sub, wide-open expanses, tons of shrubs, and high iron. Also... "It's Friday, Friday..." Seeing a CSX move for the quarry is quite rare on Fridays, with or without cars. Nonetheless I was glad to take the 3 mile walk to document such a rarity.

Eastbound from Neff
Title:  Eastbound from Neff
Description:  An eastbound train headed for St Louis on the ex MP rolls out of Neff Yard. It was a great time for CNW power, as it was all over the system, but almost none of it had been patched or repainted. JB Hunt's KC terminal was about a mile away. While killing time there, Id sometimes go down to the area around Southwest Jct, between Knoche and Neff Yards. It was always a good location.

Chesapeake Beach Railway #1 idles with a passenger train at the District Line Station in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, on May 23, 1913.
Title:  Chesapeake Beach Railway #1 idles with a passenger train at the District Line Station in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, on May 23, 1913.
Description:  Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Machine Shops in May of 1888 with construction number #1277, old #1 started life working for the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad as their #119. Identified as a class D-7a by the PRR's management, the locomotive was consolidated into the Pennsylvania Railroads official roster in 1903 after the company decided to merge several subsidiaries including the PW&B. Numbered #5119 while working on the Pennsy, the locomotive was only owned by the company for about four years until the engine was sold to the Chesapeake Beach Railway in July of 1907. After delivery to the Chesapeake Beach, the locomotive was repainted and repaired at the Seat Pleasant shops and given the name Teddy along with the number #1. My theory on why the locomotive received that name is that the president of the road at the time of the engines purchase, Otto Mears, was originally from Colorado and lived in and around the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado. Guess who was known as the hero of San Juan Hill? None other than the 26th President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt. (I know that San Juan Hill is in Cuba and the San Juan Mountains are in Colorado. Remember, just a theory.) Unfortunately, after the departure of Mears, the new management decided against continuing the tradition of naming locomotives, and so in about 1910, the name was removed with only the number (#1) remaining as shown in this 1913 photograph. Interestingly, even though the locomotive was purchased during the first decade of operation, the Chesapeake Beach had actually owned a previous locomotive numbered #1. This locomotive was inherited from the failed ventures of the Washington & Chesapeake Beach Railway which never actually ran a single train. Not much is known about this locomotive other than it was listed on the June 30, 1900, ICC Equipment Report. #1 served the railroad pulling passengers trains between the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's Hyattsville, Maryland, station and the CB's own station in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, into the late teens and maybe even as late as 1924 until it was retired and scrapped. This photograph shows old #1 at the District Line Station in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, where the railroad interchanged passengers with the Washington Railway & Electric Company and the Washington, Baltimore & Annapolis Electric Railway. This allowed an individual to travel from Baltimore all the way to Chesapeake Beach and only have to walk a few steps. This interchange was possible until both the CB and WB&A quit in 1935 due to the increasing demand and support of the personal automobile.
