JESX #5
Title:  JESX #5
Description:  Pullman heavyweight sleeper as owned by James E. Strates Shows. Could be a 7 compartment-2 drawing room (7C-2DR) sleeper, but none of those cars are listed as being sold by Pullman directly to Strates. This would be #5 (1st), as #5 (2nd) was a heavyweight Pullman Plan #3959 3 compartment-2 drawing room (3C-2DR) sleeper-lounge observation, and #5 (3rd) was a streamlined heavyweight ex-IC 52 seat chair. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Date, location, and photographer are unknown.

BN F9 768
Title:  BN F9 768
Description:  BN F9 768 at Clyde, Illinois on August 12, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as Northern Pacific F9 7007A (c/n 20324) on EMD Order 3181 in February 1955, later renumbered NP 6700C, and on March 2, 1970 became BN 9800, later still it became BN 768. As a 9800 series locomotive, it was equipped with a steam generator and was available for passenger duties, which became a moot point with the advent of Amtrak. It is seen here in it's final configuration as a freight locomotive, and likely on it's last miles as records indicate it was retired in the month that I shot this photo. As an aside, I was a CB&Q fan, and none of the CB&Q F units made it into the BN merger, so I was quite surprised to see a F unit in the Chicago area. I shot a whole roll of film on this single locomotive.

Caption On Reverse: "Pennsy 4-4-6-4 Q-2 Class built in 1945 now scrapped at Crestline, Ohio, in October of 1955." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6195, #6197, and #6186. All were built in Juniata; none of them saw more than ten years of revenue service. #6195 was constructed in June of 1945 and retired in January of 1956, #6197 was built in June of 1945 and retired in December of 1955, while #6186 was constructed in April of 1945 and retired in January of 1956.

BN 1526
Title:  BN 1526
Description:  Early BN patch job on the 1526. Seems some effort went into removing the "GN tatoo" just under the engineers window. Also from the diesel spotter guide first edition it said the way you can tell the difference between a GP7 and a GP9 is that the GP7 has 3 louvers under the cab and a GP9 has one or none.

Back at the shop
Title:  Back at the shop
Description:  T 6 18 is on the shop tracks at Springdale awaiting attention. Almost ten years from now, I will see it working the Springdale yard. Only 55 of these units were sold in the us, with N&W getting 40. They were produced between March 1958 and January 1969, with a gap from 1959-1964 when none were built. The fact that it is still with us is in itself remarkable, not to mention working daily almost a half century after Alco quit.

R 46
Title:  R 46
Description:  One of the lines that got the new R 46 cars was the N, unusual since the BMT tended to be the poor stepchild of the B Division when it came to car assignments. The IND got all the new cars, with the BMT mostly getting hand me downs that had come off the prime runs. Nonetheless, the N was assigned some of the new cars, one of which we see here during its layover time at 57 St and 7th Av. The interiors, like those of the R 44s that immediately preceded these, was a departure from the longitudinal seating of the cars of the 50s and 60s.

Title:  D&RGW 2-8-2 Class K-37 494
Description:  D&RGW 2-8-2 Class K-37 494 and 491 at Alamosa, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Locomotives in the 490-499 number series were built as standard gauge 2-8-0 Consolidations by Baldwin in 1902. They were rebuilt to narrow gauge 2-8-2's in D&RGW's own Burnham Shops between 1928-1930. None of the prominently pictured locomotives would run again. Number 490 (c/n 20695) was dismantled in 1963-64, it's on a flatcar in this photo. The smokebox went to 492, I don't know about the rest of it. Number 494 (c/n 20748) is on static display at Antonito, Colorado. Number 491 (c/n 20829) is at the Colorado Railroad Museum, property of the Colorado Historical Society.

New development and old trestle
Title:  New development and old trestle
Description:  I must say impressed with this new development, they managed to keep the industrial nature of the area intact and even left the abanoned railraod ROW's, now i just hope no one tries to make any no horn ordinances because of all these new developments.

New station
Title:  New station
Description:  The new station at Middletown is on the formerly freight only Graham Line, now handling passenger trains since the original Erie main was abandoned through Chester, Goshen and Middletown. This station is out by the Galleria, just to the north of NY 17. It may be cheaper to run, but has none of the elegance of the station it replaced, which is now a library. We see a mid day run from Suffern pausing on its way to Port Jervis with a pair of RDCs, the lead car a former NYC Beeliner. Note the railfan chase vehicle to the left of the train.

SAR Class SH-11 (Side B)
Title:  SAR Class SH-11 (Side B)
Description:  Class SH-11 (SHLJ-11) wagons entered service in 1982 and are flat wagons with solid decks and retractable twistlocks designed to transport 4 x 10ft, 2 x 20ft or 1 x 40ft containers as well as heavy road vehicles. For the road vehicle transport role each wagon comes with two bridge beams (absent on this one) that are stowed on the sides, and with a tie-down equipment storage bin that is accessed through a hole in the deck. None of these wagons have buffers to prevent container doors from being opened, probably as a result of their dual role.

Number range 23 023 554 to 23 024 291, Length between couplers 14.482m, Length over headstocks 12.190m, Length between bogie pivot centres 9.290m, Deck height 1.090m, Width 2.600m, Tare (average) 20,240kg, Load 48,000kg, Deck area 27.5m3.
