Matthew J. Ryan General Awesome image. Makes me feel kind of silly for thinking of growing up and seeing the E's on Dinkys as "the good old days". 1/5/2008 3:02:39 AM
C.S. Jackson General In the 40's it was useful moving wartime freight during World War II. In later Years it was great entertainment in case there's nothing good on "The Ed Sullivan Show." 8/9/2008 11:54:29 PM
Bob Campbell General Destination of this trip was Dubuque, IA 1/4/2017 6:18:23 PM
Charles Kinzer General I rode that trip! Note the private car "Captain Hook" with its observation platform facing the tender. An open gondola is at the end of the train. Since they couldn't turn the train at Dubuque, this put the private car at the end for the return trip to Chicago. But it also meant the open gondola was then directly behind the engine. They were late getting back to Chicago and going very fast (I'm sure at least 80 mph) and in the gondola all you could hear was a roar. No "chuff". Just a steady roar so loud you couldn't talk to each other even when shouting. A visceral experience 11/20/2020 11:23:12 PM
