South Chicago Yards. The third unit is probably E6A #631 (Ouch). Looks like 407 had a traction motor fire and is being cannibalized. The S12 is a BLW product. Most railroads would hide this mess. Not the Rock. These guys were right alone the street.

Ryan Kertis General Ouch! I wonder what happened to that E unit? 10/16/2008 1:31:57 PM
Tim Darnell General The switcher would be an S-12 not an RS-12. Sister to SMS 301, which was the RI 758! 10/29/2008 11:25:31 AM
Marty Bernard General Tim, of course you are right. I fixed the data. 10/29/2008 8:59:30 PM
Richard Haave General 631-407 were damaged near Morris, IL in 1965 IIRC. Freight had lost a pole which landed between the rails of other main track. Crew thought they had passed over it, not realizing they were pushing pole in front of them. Fireman said "I knew we were in trouble when the Mars light (631) started going around the moon...." 1/22/2009 11:59:59 AM
Richard Haave General Derailment occurred when they pushed pole into a main track switch. Engr and fireman survived. 1/22/2009 12:02:27 PM
L Beckman General First I have seen of this. The 631 doesn't look in this photo as if it has too much damage. Just a new cab needed. "Hmmm, we have the 407 over there. Yeah, we might have to fudge a little but...." Of course, by this time, passenger service miles were down. Easier just to write off the E6. Too bad; the boys at Silvis could have done the job! 2/1/2012 10:52:22 PM
Mike Maskel General NICE SHOT 1/13/2015 3:02:27 PM
Thomas Miller General They did restore 631 to operation maybe using parts from the 407. Look at the pictures of 631 taken in 1970 with the wings paint scheme. it is missing the nose head light and has the frog eye lights on the roof line. clearly she was modified to represent the present at the time of rebuilt. 5/23/2015 2:55:27 AM
