Robert Hess General This photograph was certainly taken on October 20, 1957 with K4sa No. 612 running on a Rail Fan Special. The location here however is Englishtown, NJ, where the local fire department supplied water for the tender, as the water plugs at Jamesburg had been removed. The engine than backed up and did a run by for the photographers, a few of whom can be seen in the foreground. The man wearing the white hat standing in the gangway is my uncle, William F. Hess. At the time, he was a 'Special Duty' engineman and as the Special ran on a Sunday, he was representing the Road Foreman of Engines. The fireman (partially visible at the cab window) was C.R. VanDyke, who was requested to 'make some smoke' and readily complied with the result seen here and in numerous other photos before the train stopped and everyone got back on board. 6/4/2023 1:13:28 AM
