PRR 646, K-4S, #3 of 4, c. 1953
Here is the third of four original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken at the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is the engineman's view from Pennsylvania Railroad engine #646, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1918 and retired in November of 1957 after 39 years of faithful service. Visible in the middle distance are the Westbound Locomotive Ready Tracks, where #646 will be moved to await its next passenger helper assignment up "The Mountain." The twin smokestacks at the right mark the location of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.
