CNJ GP40P #3681 - Central RR of New Jersey         
This photo shows the CNJ in commuter service during the last few years before giving up the ghost and handing passenger service to the State of New Jersey and freight to Conrail. Still, the blue and yellow coach cars were an impressive sight behind a GP40P. No photographer was listed and the date is based on the slide stamp.

Tom Beckett General The blue and yellow cars would last into the 1980's, seeing this line on a daily basis. The GP40P's would get repainted, some in the same scheme as on EL's U 34CH's, which was the NJT default scheme for a few years in the late 70's and early 80's, til the "disco" scheme was introduced. These engines would eventually get rebuilt, and are still in service. 4109 has been repainted in the scheme seen here. Cranford was the location of a small yard used by the B&O, which had trackage rights over the Reading and CNJ from Philly to the CNJ yard in Jersey City, which was abandoned at Conrail start up in 1976. Chessie continued to serve Cranford as it was the connection to the B&O owned Staten Island Rapid Transit, reached by AK draw over Kill Van Kull. CNJ also interchanged with short line Rahway Valley here. By the mid 1980's, both the RV and SIRT freight operations would be under the NYSW umbrella. SIRT, I think, still runs some freight operations near Port Ivory. Its passenger trains are op 5/27/2021 4:15:12 AM
