New Orleans Public Service car 816 was inbound on the ST. CHARLES LINE at Lee Circle. This view is looking down Howard Avenue towards the Mississippi River. The white building on the left was the headquarters of the Standard Fruit & Steamship Co., and to the right of that was the Howard Memorial Library building which was then the offices of radio station WTPS. When this photo was taken only about 20 of the 800-series cars were still around, as most had been scrapped because many NOPSI streetcar lines were discontinued after WWII. The 816 operated until the original CANAL LINE closed in 1964, and was scrapped that June. |
