Chuck Zeiler General According to Dale Jenkins book, The Illinois Terminal Railroad, Number 52 was one of two (the other was number 51) 1,000 horsepower Battery-Diesel Electric locomotives built by Saint Louis car Company, 51 built December 30, 1930, retired and scrapped February 13, 1956, and 52 (a StLCC demonstrator) built January 22, 1932, retired and scrapped February 10, 1956. The locomotives were designed for use at industries where no overhead existed or was prohibited. The batteries were located in the raised walkways between the cab and the ends. The locomotive had two Buda 6 cylinder diesel engines powering GE 66 kilowatt generators which could move the locomotive or charge the batteries. And of course, the locomotive could use the trolley poles for power when under overhead 600 volt DC wire. 2/6/2021 12:48:08 PM
