I was 14 in 2000 and owned a little point-and-shoot 35mm camera that I rarely used. I liked trains, but it never occurred to me that actively seeking them out for photography was a thing you could do unless you were a photographer for a magazine or something. Wish I had badgered my parents to take me out to hot spots like La Crosse, Prairie du Chien, Duplainville, Rochelle, Byron Hill, Oshkosh, etc.
