| It appears that the fireman is checking either water or fuel levels on the tender of the 1937 Alco-Schenectady built 4-8-4 loco, UP #817. Specs - serial #68825, class FEF-2, massive 77" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 24.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 465,000 lb, tractive effort of 63,611 lb. The loco was "vacated" in May of 1960. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection but no date was listed for it. |
