CB&Q 2-6-0 Class H-4 1261         
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-0 Class H-4 1261 at Fort Madison, Iowa on October 23, 1939, photographer unknown, image from Joe Collias collection, 8X10 print scanned from Louis Zadnichek collection. Number 1261 was built by Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works in Patterson, New Jersey, completed in March 1900 ( c/n 5516 ) as Kansas City Saint Joseph & Council Bluffs number 544, quickly reassigned to Hannibal & Saint Joseph as their 544, renumbered into the CB&Q system in 1904 to CB&Q 1261 and classed H-4, retired in April 1947.

The photograph was captioned as follows: Typical of the steam motive power housed at this tiny terminal was 2-6-0 Mogul No. 1261, here all steamed up in 1939 and awaiting departure time for a round trip over the branch with the daily except Sunday mixed train. A side-door caboose accommodated the infrequent cash rider.
