Here is the second of two successive 35mm color slides that I took while riding in an Amtrak passenger train from New Rochelle (NY) to Washington (DC) on 26 July 1987. Shown here (Front to Rear) is some of the foliage on Ward's Island, the central span of the Whitestone Bridge, a tugboat pulling a barge loaded with containerized shipments negotiating the turgid waters of Hell Gate, a small portion of Queens, and the skyline of lower Manhattan. The ghostly forms of the World Trade Center towers are visible between two Bridge cables. Photo taken while crossing the Hell Gate Bridge, which was opened on 28 March 1917. |
