Here is the first of two successive 35mm color slides that I took while riding in an Amtrak passenger train from New Rochelle (NY) to Washington (DC) on 26 July 1987. Shown here (Front to Rear) is some of the foliage on Ward's Island, the northern end of the Whitestone Bridge, the dog-leg entrance to the waters of Hell Gate, a tiny tip of Queens, as well as the skyline of midtown Manhattan. The ghostly forms of the World Trade Center towers are barely visible at the far left. Photo taken while crossing the Hell Gate Bridge, which was opened on 28 March 1917 ~ slightly more than 70 years earlier! |
