HELM GP40 3074
Helm Leasing GP40 3074 had been built in February 1970 as Illinois Central 3074 and it was the very last GP40 bought new by that railroad. The IC’s first 60 GP40’s were largely devoid of options, but the last 15 came fully loaded with dynamic brakes, big fuel tanks, L-shaped windshields, oscillating signal lights and snow plows as shown here. When the 15-year lease expired on this unit in 1985 it was returned to its owner and managed by HELM. Here it is on the SP-IC interchange yard at the east end of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE while on lease to the SP. From HELM it moved on to Morrison-Knudsen as MKCX 4302 and then to the Paducah & Louisville as the 2109.
