NYC 4050, 4058 & 4063 - New York Central (Penn Central)
This trio of EMD built E8A's sit in an unidentified yard in Toledo, OH, wiating for their next assignment. The slide is dated 4/1975 and if it weren't for the Penn Central logo on a unit just ahead. it might appear to be an earlier date as none of the diesels have been repainted, renumbered or new logo added. Tom Beckett General I'm going to guess by the platform that the train is probably at Toledo Union Station, and the date is some time between the 1968 merger date, and May 1 1971, the Amtrak start date. Trailing the units is a baggage car that has PC lettering on it, putting it solidly in that time frame. The other thought that occurred to me was that PC put some of its E's into freight service, though I don't recall seeing any photos of them pulling freights, except for mail/trailvan/Flexi Van trains, which were not really freight. I have not heard of PC doing this anywhere, either, unlike EL, which regeared a number of their E's after the passenger trains quit, though they kept a bunch for Port Jervis trains until the U 34's arrived in 1971. I know some of PC's E units wound up in Jersey, working on the NY & Long Branch, and also in Boston commuter service. 5/14/2019 6:14:40 AM
