PRR Westbound Pushers, #1 of 2, c. 1951
AHC. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides via Al Chione that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here (L to R) are two unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives and engine #9689. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9689 is an EH-15 built in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in August of 1967 after just 18 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-A set is pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for their next helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." The photographer's name, the exact date, and the road number of the N-5 cabin car are not recorded.
