PC FL9 #5054  Contributor's Pick!       
Here is another ex-NH unit now in the mostly black shroud of Penn Central. Unknown photographer. Thanks to Tom Beckett (see comment below), the color is actually dark blue but road grime sure makes it look like the PC black!

Tom Beckett General This one is actually dark blue. There were a number of these in this scheme, and some that got the MTA blue/yellow, much like the colors on the LIRR C 420's of that era, as MTA worked somewhat haphazardly toward a unified image. One of the things to note on the FL 9's in this time frame is that they ran most of the time on diesel, even in the Park Avenue tunnel. The electric components were prone to fires, and sometimes just didn't work, period, so PC, later CR and MN, just ran them straight diesel into GCT.
