| Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here on the right (L to R) are PRR engines #9691 and #7206. Both were built by EMD. #9691 is an EH-15 built in 1949 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #7206 is an EFS-17M built in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. They have just come down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve with a 60-car mixed-cargo freight train and are passing the derailment site with caution. The caboose is #477382. Visible in the center is PRR steam-powered crane #490965. Visible on the left is one of the two derailed locomotives, PRR engine #8890 ~ an AS-10 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. Visible in the distance (L to R) are the PRR Test Plant Building and the 17th Street Bridge. |
