PRR 8655, AS-18AM, 1961
4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1961. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8655, #8676, and #8661. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8655 was built in 1957, but #8676 and #8661 were built in 1958. They are pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train pulled by PRR engines #9607 and #9614-B, but will uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another run up the Allegheny Mountains. Visible on the left are numerous passenger cars marshalled for reconditioning in the PRR's Passenger Car Shops behind them. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge. ("Red Shift" slide converted to Black & White.)
