| Here is page six of an eight-page article by Harry T. Sohlberg entitled "Horseshoe Curve." It was published originally in the March 1941 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 33. Top Photo: Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3733 and #1339. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics" built in Juniata. #3733 was built during February of 1920 and retired in April of 1956. #1339 was built during April of 1918 and retired in February of 1956. They are pulling an eastbound passenger train around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia. Note the illustration of an inclined plane and a two-sectioned boat on the Allegheny Portage Railroad (1834-1854). |
