Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class SM-19A 52632 at the Eola Reclamation Plant on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 52632 was built by the CB&Q between 1944 and 1945 at Havelock, Nebraska, one of 200 class SM-19A stock cars assigned numbers 52500-52699. The difference between the class SM-19's and the SM-19A's was the use of a rectangular panel roof from Standard Railway Equipment Company on the SM-19A's. The piece of wood mounted diagonally in brackets to the left of the door was known as a Bull Board. It served two purposes. After the car was loaded, it was positioned across the doorway to prevent the animals from escaping the car before the door was closed. It also served to protect the door from being knocked off the door tracks during transit in case the animals became excited and banged into the door. |
