CO 4-4-2 #287 - Chesapeake & Ohio  Contributor's Pick!       
Great action shot of a 1902 Alco-Schenectady built 4-4-2 in action with its varnish in tow. Note on back states #287 westbound on train #13." This loco was one of only twenty 4-4-2 Atlantics on the C&O roster but they did hold on for decades with thirteen of them remaining in use until 1949. Specs - class A-16, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, engine weight of 173,000 lb and tractive effort of 27,073. The class was rebuilt in 1920's with reduced boiler pressure but increased cylinder size. Net effect was the tractive effort remained largely the same. Unknown photographer. Built as # 81, renumbered 275 in April 1925, renumbered again to 287 in December 1947, scrapped in April 1949.
