Southern 5003  Contributor's Pick!
5003 is heading back north at Barnwell, SC in 1979 with train 98. This rail line originally ran from Columbia, SC to Hardeeville where I understand Southern had trackage rights on ACL into Savannah. The line was abandoned from Hardeeville to Furman, SC in the 1960s. In the 1980s NS started abandoning more sections of this track. Ultimately, the line was abandoned to near Columbia, SC. At the time of this photograph, this section of the line through Barnwell was used only about once a week; usually on Saturday. Note the green Barnwell sign in front of the covered hopper marking the location. There was a depot or station of some sort located here but I never had a chance to photograph it before it was demolished.
