PRR 4465
The last E44 in existance, number 4465 was built by the General Electric Corporation in 1963 for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Constructed for use in freight service on the Pennsy's electrified lines on the eastern end of the system, this unit also saw service for Penn Central and Conrail before it being placed in retirement after electrified freight operations were discontinued. Conrail sold 4465, along with a few sister units, to NJ Transit where they languished at the former CNJ Elizabethport shops for a few years before being sold again to Amtrak. Amtrak painted 4465 silver and planned to use it as a MOW unit on the Northeast Corridor. However it wasn't long before Amtrak donated the unit to the Museum. Today it sits on display alongside many of its former roster mates from the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad.
