CN 8804, BCOL 4642, CN 2273 at MILW Neenah, WI Depot         
CN ore train passes the former MILW depot as it crawls southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 8 Jan. '15. The depot was built by Milwaukee & Northern in 1882 and is home to the Neenah-Menasha Model Railroad Club. The head of the train had crawled over a mile through Neenah and into Menasha far enough for the train to clear the turnout at the east end of the wye. The train has now reversed to take the east leg of the wye into the yard, before eventually continuing on toward its destination.

T. P. Bruss General The few times I have caught this train and observed both ends, it has always had four locomotives. Sometimes it has four locomotives on one end, other times it has two locomotives on each end. On this day I only saw this end with three locomotives, maybe there was one on the other end, maybe not. I am not a subject matter expert by any means, but I suspect this unique and interesting maneuver with the Neenah wye has more to do with the ore cars than the motive power. I have watched this train pull into the yard and simply reverse direction like the typical Stevens Point to Green Bay (or vice versa) train. I have also watched this train use the wye to turn the entire train. To this novice, it looks like the automated and manual actuators to open the doors of these ore cars are only located on one side of the car and it looks like all of the actuators are on the same side of the train. I imagine that for empty trains heading back to the mine, the cars orientation wouldn’t matter; but loa 1/13/2015 4:31:48 AM
