Almost literally, since Buffalo was just about mid way through the New York-Chicago journey. The classic art deco station served for 50 years, just a little too far east of downtown Buffalo. When passenger loadings tailed off in the 60s, there was nothing else to bring people out to that part of town, and the station area languished. Eventually closed by Amtrak in 1979, it sits today largely returning to nature, as there is no practical maintenance. In 1986, it still looked rather stately from the driveway.
